Children’s orthopaedic care

Children’s orthopaedics in Manchester for ages 3 and over, with clear assessment and guidance for lower limb concerns, pain and injuries.

What can I help with?

Children and teenagers can develop symptoms through growth, activity or injury. Careful assessment helps distinguish normal development from problems that may need monitoring or treatment.

  • Hip and knee pain
  • Walking and gait concerns, including in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Knock knees, bow legs and other alignment concerns
  • Sports-related lower limb injuries
  • Osgood–Schlatter disease and osteochondritis dissecans (OCD)

A consultation for your family.

We will talk about what you have noticed, your child’s symptoms and activities, and any previous treatment. Examination helps guide whether further investigation, monitoring or treatment is appropriate.

The aim is to explain the findings in language you and your child can understand and to agree a practical next step together.

Common lower limb concerns

Knee pain during growth

Active children may develop pain around the knee during a growth phase. Osgood–Schlatter disease is one possible cause. Activity advice, rehabilitation and a gradual return to sport may help.

Alignment and walking

In-toeing, out-toeing, knock knees and bow legs often change as a child grows. Assessment can identify when observation is appropriate and when further investigation is needed.

Sports injuries and OCD

Pain, swelling, catching or reduced function after activity may need assessment. Osteochondritis dissecans affects the cartilage and underlying bone, and management depends on age, symptoms and imaging findings.

A plan suited to your child.

Options may include monitoring, activity advice, physiotherapy or rehabilitation. Surgery is discussed when appropriate for a specific diagnosis; an assessment does not mean an operation is needed.
